- The flyer states this show has ‘One Man To Do It All’ and Charles Ross certainly did do it all at the Palace Theatre, Southend last night – the action, the dialogue with character voices, the sound effects and the music!
To fully appreciate this show I believe you need to have a working knowledge of the Peter Jackson films as well as the Tolkien text, as much of what you see is adapted from the films.
The show itself is split into 3 sections, each focussing on one of the books / films, with a short break in between so Charles can rehydrate – a necessity when you see the amount of energy he puts into the performance. He fills these short breaks with anecdotes and audience participation.
This along with his comedic asides, references to other films, music, adverts and even politics, takes the show beyond a re-enactment of The Lord of The Rings story, into the realms of a one-man stand-up comedy show, which at no point detracts for the enjoyment of seeing and hearing the Tolkien classic acted out by one person, and which had me in tears of laughter throughout.
One Man Lord of the Rings is an evening of fast paced LOTR action and laughter well worth the ticket price.
There are 10 more performances of the show planned, showing at various venues throughout October 2015, see http://www.onemanlotr.com/performances/ for more details.
